| FLORIDA KEYS |
| Bonefish & Tarpon |
| The Florida Keys are a chain of rocky islands stretching some 180
miles from Biscayne Bay to the Tortugas. This is a beautiful and interesting area and
there is much to offer fishermen and their non-fishing partners. The area covers some
4,000 square miles and contains over 500 islands and cays and there is good fishing for
tarpon, permit and bonefish. |
| FISHING IN THE KEYS |
Bonefishing around Islamorada is consistently good although not
easy - the bonefish are wary. It is unlikely that you would spend a week there in the
spring or the autumn without seeing at least one double figure bonefish. Although
sport fishing is big business and guide boats abound, the Keys do not show signs of
over-fishing - with many bonefish in the 9lb range. We have chosen some of the best
guides and try to match a guide with an angler’s ability, experience and expectations.
In the autumn thousands of small and medium sized tarpon in the 30-80lb range provide
exhilarating action. In April, May and June large numbers of big tarpon in the
100-200lb range, migrate along the channels and into the backcountry. Fly-fishing does
not really come into its own until late May or early June, however with bait, a big tarpon
in the 150 to 200lb bracket, and possibly several over the course of a week, can easily be
achieved. |
